Laos Continuing Medical Education in 2023

 

This March 2023 feature story from WONCA (World Organization of Family Doctors) highlights the development of the Family Medicine Specialist Program in Lao PDR.    click here

 

It sum-mates a lot of work by many people in gradually building a training program to meet health care needs within the country of Laos.

 

*Family Medicine Specialist Training has been restructured and is now a 3 year program starting with the 17th Graduating Year

 

    •  Year 1 – Vientiane University Health Sciences
    •  Year 2 – Provincial Hospital Placement
    •  Year 3 – District Hospital Placement with Community Project

 

Highlights include:

 

  • Updating accreditation requirements including evaluations, testing,
  • CEX Exams (evaluation of  trainee interaction with a patient in a clinical encounter).
  • Updating the Evaluation and Training logbook to reflect the new curriculum
  • Requiring teaching and learning session with Case studies and related topics.
  • Evaluating Professionalism and Behavior

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other Current Initiatives

 

*Upgrade skills in specialty areas (surgery, pediatrics,gynecology,

 internal medicine, others) to rural family medicine specialists.

 

* Professional Development Education events provide ongoing medical

education for the Family Medicine graduates. This includes the Annual

Continuing Medical Education event bringing Laos Family Medicine

Specialists together to attend workshops and collaborate with their peers. click here

 

 

 

 

 

* Maternal and Child Health training including the Helping Babies Breathe, Helping Mothers Survive, Pre-Eclampsia/ Eclampsia, Bleeding After Birth.
